At the heart of the Moorton Community social work novels is young teenager Clyton Laurent who has been in his care since his mother died when he was young. Unable to settle into any permanent placement, he bounced around the care system drifting into low level crime. His path crossed with newly qualified social worker Paige Emerson, however when she attempted to find out more about his past, her enquiries were blocked at the higest level and she found herself increasingly under unwanted police attention.

Against her better judgement, Clynton was befriended by Paige's father, a former police sergeant and foster carer, with the teenager slowly beginning to accept becoming part of a family, however mysterious forces at work and shocks from the past soon exposed all parties to danger, inclucing Paige's young son Jake. Just what secret was being hidden and what is the hidden connection between the teenager and the social worker?
